My Contact Improvisation background

I have been holding regular classes, workshops and jams in Cape Town for the last 10 years and it’s amazing to witness our community growing. I started dancing CI in 2008 with Jori Snell and later Lucia Walker. They were my first teachers, and important initiators of the CI scene in Cape Town. I began teaching CI in Makhanda in 2011 while studying at Rhodes University, and since 2014 have been teaching in Cape Town. I have also taught regular classes in Amsterdam between 2019-2022. I regularly travel to study, teach and dance at CI festivals around the world.

I have studied Contact Improvisation with Nancy Stark Smith at Earthdance, Massachusetts, and this has been fundamental to my teaching practice. Other influential teachers from whom I have learned include Kirstie Simson, Karen Nelson, Martin Keogh, Melcom Manning, Julyen Hamilton, Jess Curtis, Joerg Hassmann, Mirva Mäkinen, Katja Mustonen, Otto Akkanen, Leonardo Lambruschini, Sebas van Wetten, Tom Goldhand, Raul Saldarriaga, Scott Wells, Roman Singh, Serafima Darova and many more.

I am also a certified teach of Skinner Releasing Technique which has had an important influence on my approach to teaching Contact Improvisation.

Facilitator Training

I recently held a facilitator training for a group of new teachers in our community. It has developed into a continuous laboratory for discussion and study around facilitation skills specific to CI. It is wonderful to see CI expanding in Cape Town with the energy and offerings from the new facilitators. I am delighted by the support and resource created by the group to guide and grow CI practice with clarity and depth in our community. During the times that I am travelling, the regular Monday evening classes will be taught by Philip van Zyl, Andrew van Diemen, Francesca Annenberg, Olivia Gardy, Dave Gardner, Adam Salmon, Tossie van Tonder, Nico Athene and Laing de Villiers. They also offer their own classes, workshops and jams in the Western Cape.
